TIFTON – Eating fresh, local food is about to get easier for some families in the Tifton area. Starting this Saturday, the weekly Downtown Tifton Farmers’ Market will participate in the USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program. SNAP helps reduce food insecurity or hunger for low-income households.

Households in the SNAP program can now use EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards to purchase fresh produce and other food items at the market—and every EBT dollar will be doubled.

Cardholders will determine the amount of purchase and will receive wooden tokens worth $1 each—2 tokens for every dollar purchased. With those tokens, they can purchase fresh-picked produce, local honey, homemade breads, preserves and other food items—some produced using organic farming methods. EBT cards will be processed using a paper voucher and phone verification procedure at the market welcome table, then processed on an EBT machine off-site after the market.

The Double Dollars program is made possible by the Wholesome Wave Foundation, a national private foundation making locally grown, healthy, sustainable foods available to all communities. A Georgia chapter of the Wholesome Wave Foundation was established in 2008. The EBT machine was provided by the state of Georgia at no cost to the market.

The Tifton market is the first south Georgia farmers’ market west of Savannah to offer the Double Dollars program, and one of only 11 in the state to offer it this year.

“We know that many families and individuals in our community are struggling with rising food and health care costs and want to be healthier. Our market goods are already more affordable and fresher than many supermarket offerings, so getting them at half price is an incredible deal on many levels,” Culbreath said.

Culbreath explained that the Double Dollars program is only available for EBT cardholders and that the market is not able to accept standard debit cards, credit cards or WIC vouchers at this time.

The market, part of the City of Tifton’s Main Street Program, is open every Saturday through October, 9 a.m. until noon, and is managed by local volunteers. It is located downtown at the train museum depot platform at the corner of Tift Ave. and Third St., next to the red caboose.

Wash your windows at least once a week on the slowest day of the week; wash your front door daily because it is so visible.

Polish your brass door handle or scrub your aluminum knob weekly. First impressions matter.

Scrape off old stickers from windows — Visa, MasterCard, etc. It is assumed that you take plastic in today’s retail environment

Remove old posters and window clutter so shoppers can see into your store. Look inviting to curious eyes.

Post your hours on the door so shoppers know when to come back and make a purchase.

Change your window displays frequently.

Replace burned out light bulbs so your store looks maintained and well lit.

Increase the wattage of light bulbs throughout your store.

Leave your display window lights on at night to highlight your merchandise 24 hours a day. Your windows are free advertising!

Remove bars on your windows to show shoppers that the neighborhood is safe. Don’t feel comfortable doing that yet? Move the bars inside to the back of the display window.

Replace your yellowed Plexiglas windows with clear glass. All the cleaning in the world won’t make a difference if your windows look dingy.

Ask your customers what they like about the appearance of your business and what they would like to see change. Then, implement the suggestions.

Go on vacation. When you come back, you will have a fresh perspective. Walk through your store with a pad in hand and write down anything “you never noticed before” that should be repaired, cleaned, upgraded, or replaced.

Hire a part-time employee and ask what he or she would change. Or, assign your new employee to make the upgrades!
